BHG - In recent years, Quang Binh District, Ha Giang Province, has capitalised on its fertile land and abundant water resources to encourage residents to convert mixed-use gardens into productive plots and establish model gardens cultivating high-value crops. Thanks to creative and concrete implementation methods, many households have achieved stable incomes from this initiative.

The guava garden of Mr Hoang Xuan Bac, Group 1, Yen Binh Township, provides a good income for his family.
The guava garden of Mr Hoang Xuan Bac, Group 1, Yen Binh Township, provides a good income for his family.

A prime example is the family of Hoang Xuan Bac from Group 1, Yen Binh Township. His garden, spanning over 2,000 square metres, has been tidily renovated and scientifically arranged to grow a variety of fruit trees such as pomelo, guava, lemon, sapodilla, and ornamental roses. The garden generates more than 50 million VND in income annually. In addition, he maintains two fishponds (totalling 600 square metres), raising tilapia, grass carp, and carp, earning over 100 million VND each year. Bac said that garden renovation is not just a means of livelihood but also a way to maintain good health in old age.

Between 2021 and 2024, 328 households across the district engaged in garden renovation under Resolution 05, including 140 poor households and 188 near-poor households. Of these, 230 households received loans. The total renovated garden area reached nearly 190,000 square metres, comprising over 24,000 square metres of fruit trees, 39,000 square metres of vegetables and tubers, nearly 30,000 square metres of aquaculture, and another 30,000 square metres for livestock. In addition, 952 other households voluntarily renovated over 552,000 square metres of land. In 2025, the district plans to support 35 poor households renovating over 26,000 square metres.

Initial economic results are clear: many households are earning 2–3 million VND per month from vegetables, 5–10 million VND from livestock, and even 15–30 million VND in areas with favourable conditions such as Tan Bac, Xuan Giang, and Vi Thuong.

According to Tang Trung In, Vice Chairman of the District People’s Committee, the district will continue to promote the garden renovation movement by coordinating outreach efforts and providing residents with technical support, funding, planning assistance, and guidance on crop selection suitable to local conditions. The goal is for every commune and township to develop at least one model garden yielding high economic value in the near future.
