Digital transformation — solution to promote community-based tourism development
BHG - Digital transformation is not merely about the application of technology but also involves a comprehensive change in the organisation, management, and delivery of services. In the tourism sector, digital transformation has opened numerous opportunities, fostering the growth of community-based tourism, improving service quality, and enhancing visitor experiences.
In recent years, community-based tourism in the province has flourished thanks to various favourable factors. Travellers increasingly seek authentic and immersive cultural experiences, creating significant opportunities for community-based tourism. Local residents can share their daily lives, customs, and unique cultural traditions with visitors. Digital platforms play a crucial role in connecting tourists with communities, making it easier for them to access information about festivals and folk games, thereby gaining deeper insights into local customs, traditions, and lifestyles. This interaction not only enriches the travel experience but also strengthens the bond between visitors and local communities.

Additionally, smart tourism applications allow travellers to access detailed information about destinations, itineraries, and services, along with reviews from previous visitors. This enables tourists to plan their trips proactively, discovering hidden gems, excellent dining spots, and unique events, making their journeys more meaningful.
Digital transformation also facilitates the diversification of community-based tourism products, offering enriching experiences such as exploring traditional craft villages and historical sites, thereby enhancing destination promotion. Furthermore, it connects different stakeholders within the community, establishing a unified tourism ecosystem in which households, craft villages, restaurants, and accommodations can collaborate seamlessly to create comprehensive service packages. This not only enhances the value of community-based tourism products but also fosters stronger connections among people.
Nguyen Van Thien, owner of Thien Homestay in Tha Village, Phuong Do Commune (Ha Giang City), shared that his family is one of three households in the Tha Village homestay cluster to have been honoured with the ASEAN Homestay Award 2025 in Malaysia. This recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgment of his family's and the village's efforts in preserving and developing community-based tourism. To attract visitors, he has promoted his services on digital platforms, helping his homestay welcome over 500 tourists in 2024, primarily international travellers.
Digital transformation is playing a crucial role in the sustainable development of the tourism industry, especially in community-based tourism. Digital solutions help raise awareness of cultural values, diversify tourism products, optimise management, and strengthen community connections. By leveraging technology, community-based tourism not only attracts visitors but also improves service quality, thus contributing to better livelihoods for the locals.
