Safeguarding peace on the border

Amidst the rugged mountains of Xin Man commune, a dedicated militia squad stands guard day and night along the border, working closely with the Border Guard forces, local authorities, and Party organizations to patrol and protect national sovereignty and security.

Established in 2014, the nine-member squad is composed of outstanding young men selected from local villages. For the past decade, they have maintained a 24/7 presence, overcoming treacherous terrain and harsh weather conditions to patrol border trails, clear marker areas, educate residents on the law, and prevent unauthorized farming and settlement across the border.

Between 2024 and the first half of 2025, the squad has participated in 32 joint patrols with the Border Guard forces. Beyond defense duties, they are also actively involved in forest fire prevention, supporting sustainable livelihoods for locals - especially by helping plant cardamom and trees to prevent soil erosion and improve living conditions.

During the flood season, Xin Man’s standing militia helps residents move belongings to safety.

Remarkably, as part of the program to eliminate temporary housing, the militia contributed nearly 200 workdays to assist poor households. They also regularly help locals relocate property during floods and participate in disease prevention for both people and livestock.

Chairman of Xin Man Commune People's Committee, Mr. Then Van Tien, said: “This is a core force in maintaining border security and an extended arm of the local government in promoting policies and mobilizing people to improve the economy.”

With a deep sense of responsibility and strong bonds with the community, the standing militia of Xin Man commune serves not only as a protective shield at the border but also as a dependable support for development efforts. Their green uniforms have become a true symbol of peace along the nation’s frontier.
