BHG - A miraculous feat in emergency care and treatment was carried out by doctors and nurses at the Paediatrics Department of Ha Giang Provincial General Hospital: saving the life of a newborn suffering from sepsis just two hours after birth. “Our child was brought into this world by us, but it was the doctors who truly gave him life, snatching him back from the hands of death,” said the family of baby Nguyen Phong Phu Trong in an emotional message of gratitude.

Born via caesarean section on May 8 at 38 weeks of gestation at Dong Van District General Hospital, baby Trong weighed 3 kg. However, within just two hours of birth, he began to show signs of respiratory distress and cyanosis and was diagnosed with systemic infection. He was immediately transferred in critical condition to the provincial hospital. There, the paediatrics department initiated intensive resuscitation measures including invasive mechanical ventilation, intravenous nutrition, antibiotics, and round-the-clock monitoring.

Nguyen Phong Son, the baby’s father, recounted: “The first three days were terrifying — our child was in constant danger. We couldn’t care for him directly and could only receive updates from the doctors three to four times a day.” As the baby’s mother was still undergoing treatment in Dong Van, the hospital staff also had to help source breast milk. Thanks to the dedication and high expertise of the medical team, the baby gradually recovered after a week of intensive treatment and was discharged in stable condition on May 19. The family expressed deep gratitude for the comprehensive care their child received, even though they only had a birth certificate at the time. All necessary procedures were handled with full support. “These doctors not only have skills, but they have heart and virtue too,” said Son emotionally.

Dr Le Thi Toan, Deputy Head of the Paediatrics Department, explained that this was a particularly severe case, with a very high risk of death if not treated promptly. She praised the family for its full cooperation and trust, which contributed greatly to the success of the treatment. Dr Toan also urged expectant mothers to attend regular antenatal check-ups to detect any risks early and ensure the safety of both mother and baby.

The family of Phu Trong later sent a heartfelt thank-you letter to the doctors and nurses of the paediatrics department, expressing their sincere appreciation for the team’s dedication to protecting the health and lives of children.
