Sturgeon breeding in Cao Bo
BHG - Cao Bo Commune, Vi Xuyen District, has favourable natural conditions for the development of cold-water fish breeding, especially sturgeon.
Thanks to the cool climate and terrain, along with an abundance of clean water from the high mountains, many households have begun to apply the sturgeon breeding model and have achieved positive results.

Dang Van Thang, one of the pioneers, invested 200 million VND to build four sturgeon breeding tanks in 2020. In the four years since, he has expanded to nine tanks with about 6,000 fish.
Thang said that sturgeon requires high technology but does not require much care, mainly ensuring a clean, cold-water source, disinfection, and maintaining a stable temperature for the fish to grow well and have few diseases. Each year, he earns a profit of nearly 400 million VND after deducting expenses.
Sturgeon is a specialty fish with high nutritional value that is easy to process into many dishes and is very popular in the market.
However, sturgeon is also a difficult fish to breed, requiring a strict living environment, including a well-circulated water source and a temperature not exceeding 27 degrees Celsius. After about 13 months of breeding, the fish reach a weight of 2 - 2.5 kg/fish and can be sold for 190,000 to 220,000 VND/kg, higher than other varieties of fish.
Currently, Cao Bo Commune has eight small and medium-sized sturgeon farming households. The local government is coordinating with the district's functional departments to support farmers, encourage households to cooperate in raising and consuming products.
At the same time, the locality also hopes to attract more attention and investment from units and businesses to promote existing potential, replicate the sturgeon breeding model to create more jobs and increase people’s income.
The expansion of the sturgeon breeding model not only effectively utilises the natural cold-water source but also opens a new direction for economic development for the commune, thus contributing to improving the lives of the people.
